RAILING AGAINST
Spatial design, construction and performance ● Kirchberg am Wagram, AT ● 06 / 2026

Railing against is an architectural intervention that builds a bridge between a closed building, heavy with past, and an open view into the wide land beyond. The former youth detention facility – with its windows barricaded with iron bars, its high walls high, its heavy gates – tells a history of coercion, loneliness, and isolation. Railing against extends it, opens it, makes it climbable. The lightweight timber construction attaches itself to the façade and unlocks what was once sealed off: platforms from which one can step outside; a railing that offers hold and orientation – and frees the gaze into the open land behind. Slide, ladder, and flowing levels make the exit possible.
